Can slimes spawn naturally?

Slimes only generate in swamp biomes, as there are no slime chunks. When I tried to build a slime farm, I saw that it wasn't producing anything. I AFKed there anyway for about 1 HR and it produced 24 slimeballs. I could have built it wrong.

Can slimes spawn naturally?

I built a swamp slime farm but no slimed are spawning. Animal and mob spawning is turned on.
