The Complex Rune Overhaul Has Arrived!

Our rune systems are more than four and a half years old at this point. There have been renovations here and there to improve them, but ultimately the core infrastructure was not made for the sheer number of runes we have nowadays: more than 750 unique runes across all game modes. We've also hit a lot of barriers when designing new runes. So, we decided to overhaul the systems, and we are rolling it out globally right now, one zone at a time.
This is not a content update, and at a quick glance, you probably won't notice what has changed; this is by design. Everything should work like it always has, just improved on a technical level. That being said, we also have new commands, more customizable rune preferences, and a new and improved look for rune messages and rune descriptions. We're also making all mining/logging/farming/digging/fishing runes work (to at least some extent) while in the Pharaoh's Tomb and the Dragon's Dojo. Keep reading for a list of each and every change.
We've done a lot of internal testing, but because there are so many runes and they can differ significantly depending on the game mode or zone, it's only natural that there will still be bugs. We ask that you be patient with us during this system transition, and please make a support ticket to report any bugs you may find.
What's next? You can expect future runes to break the mold and do things we've never been able to do before. The old systems were very rigid and limited, so this overhaul will definitely expand our horizons. But, of course, not all new runes can be groundbreaking; a lot of it will be subtle or more of what you're familiar with.
New Features
- Expanded preferences, accessible through /runeprefs or /prefs → Rune Preferences. Sound, particles, messages, and more can now be customized for each rune.
- New Command: /runeinfo. Using it will open up a menu with the descriptions of all the runes on your held item.
- New Command: /damagehistory. Using it will open up a menu showing the sources of damage you've recently taken or dealt.
- Your damage history can then be shared with other players in chat if you choose to.
- A button to view your damage history will also appear in a personal chat message after you die.
System Improvements
- More detailed rune descriptions with tags, color coding, and scaling progression.
- New rune messages. Hover over the rune name to see the description of the rune.
- Runes that drop various loot now display their loot table in the infuser.
- All mining/logging/farming/digging/fishing runes should now work (to at least some extent) in the Pharaoh's Tomb and the Dragon's Dojo. Since fishing is a lot faster in these zones, fishing runes will only activate 20% of the time to keep things balanced.
- What counts as ore, wood, crops, etc. has been standardized for all runes.
- Rune cooldown popups are now tracked even when you're not holding or wearing an item with the rune.
Technical Changes
- All rune drops now pass through the same pipeline. Interactions between runes will be a lot more consistent.
- Bonus drops from MCMMO now also pass through the rune pipeline. This means that runes like Honest Work can apply their value increase to the bonus drops from MCMMO's Herbalism.
- All rune sounds now count as player sounds. This means they can be adjusted as such in your game settings. Volume can additionally be adjusted through Rune Preferences (/runeprefs).
- When a rune triggers, your active runes are now snapshotted. This means a rune like Clown Pickaxe will now remember what runes you had when it activated, allowing you to safely swap your gear around without consequences.
Miscellaneous Changes
- Rune symbols were changed to be 8x8 in size for a consistent look. All future rune symbols will follow this pattern.
- Fixed automatic binding for backpack abilities.
- Runes can now be applied to copper equipment.
Rune Changes
- NEW — Scattershot: A rune for bows that has a chance to shoot multiple arrows but with very little accuracy, resulting in a large spread pattern.
- Tesla Coil: Can now be triggered when hit by a mob and now has a cooldown popup. (Popup feature does not exist on Factions.)
- Rest: Now has a cooldown popup. (Popup feature does not exist on Factions.)
- Sky Stepper: Cooldown messages adjusted.
- Decapitation: No longer works while in offhand.
- Ricochet: No longer works while in offhand.
- Firework Footsteps: No longer works while in offhand.
- Arrow Storm: Now works in combat with mobs.
- Puffer: Can now damage mobs.
- Shield Wall: Renamed to Guards Up and added sound effects.
- Plagueweaver: Can now also inflict poison on mobs.
- Barricade: Can now push mobs.
- Berserker: Added a swing animation to the offhand and a message when it triggers.
- Saboteur: Reworked. Landmines are now disguised as random items, with a nameplate visible to the user and their allies. When any enemy steps on a landmine, they're briefly launched upwards.
- Greenhouse: Added new sound effects and particles.
- Confidential Contraband: Treasure keys will now drop on the ground if you already have one.
- Telekinesis: Now displays particles for mob drops too.
- Ancient Pickaxe: Can now trigger Excavator and vice versa.
- Demonic Axe: Apple quality now scales with level, as it should have.
- Christmas Helmet: Now works in combat with mobs, and the freeze it inflicts is now consistent with other runes.
- Christmas Fishing Rod: No longer gated by the activation chance of the rune it triggers, and fixed a bug where it could activate runes from crates released after the Christmas Crate.
- Celestial Pickaxe: No longer gated by the activation chance of the rune it triggers. Final activation chance is about the same.
- Clown Sword: Fixed a bug where the limit would apply to mobs.
- Ender Backpack: Adjusted targeting and added new particles.
- Pool Party Set Bonus: No longer works while it's raining.
- Zenith Set Bonus: Now removes potion effects when activated.
- Prismatic Set Bonus: Added particles.
- Prismatic Backpack: Added particles.
Other Rune Changes
Zenith- Fish reeled in by the Zenith enchant while AFK no longer count toward fishing missions, clue scrolls, milestones, or statistics.
- Phantom Blocks no longer transforms blocks that are inside claims or that you otherwise cannot break. Its area block-changing effect now respects claim and region protection.
- The Naughtiest no longer turns ore into coal ore (or diamond ore at max Haste) when you cannot break the block, such as ore inside a claim or protected region.
- Fixed the Greedy Mobs enchant not collecting loot from custom mobs killed by Wind Dancer tornadoes.
Thank you!!!
Four and a half years of rune infrastructure rebuilt from the ground up, rolling out zone by zone right now. If you spot anything behaving oddly with a rune, please open a support ticket so the team can squash it quickly. Flash Events also got a fairer points-based scoring system across every PvE zone, and there's a fresh batch of fixes and quality-of-life changes across the board.
Thank you for all the reports and suggestions made since we released!
Several backend changes and fixes have already been made based on your reports!
