Can You Play Pixelmon on Bedrock?
The short answer, why, and what Bedrock players can do instead
Short answer: No. Pixelmon only works on Minecraft Java Edition. There is no official Pixelmon for Bedrock Edition, so it isn't playable on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, phones or tablets. The good news: if you play Minecraft on a Windows PC, you probably already own Java Edition and can start playing Pixelmon today.
Why Pixelmon is Java only
Pixelmon Reforged is a Java mod that runs on the NeoForge mod loader. It adds hundreds of Pokemon, battles, items and menus directly to your game, so it has to be installed on your own copy of Minecraft. Bedrock Edition can't run Java mods, and its add-on system works in a completely different way. That's why Pixelmon servers, including ours, require Java Edition with the mod installed.
You may see Bedrock add-ons or Marketplace maps with Pokemon-style creatures, but they are not Pixelmon and can't connect to Pixelmon servers.
Can Bedrock players join a Pixelmon server with Geyser?
No. Geyser lets Bedrock players join many regular Java servers, but Pixelmon needs the mod running on the player's own device. Without it, a Bedrock player wouldn't see any Pokemon, battles or Pixelmon menus, so Pixelmon servers can't support Bedrock players.
How to play Pixelmon if you're on Bedrock
- On a Windows PC: Minecraft for PC comes as "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition", so you most likely already own Java. Open the Minecraft Launcher, choose Java Edition, and install a Pixelmon modpack.
- On Mac or Linux: these computers run Java Edition, so you can install Pixelmon right away.
- On console or mobile: Pixelmon isn't available. You'll need a PC or Mac with Java Edition.
How to join Complex Pixelmon on Java
- Install the official Complex Pixelmon modpack on CurseForge. It sets up Minecraft 1.21.1 and Pixelmon Reforged for you. Give it 3 to 5 GB of RAM (4 GB is best).
- Launch the modpack.
- Go to Multiplayer, click Add Server and enter pixel.mc-complex.com.
- Join and accept the server resource pack. Your rival meets you at spawn to choose your starter. Then dive into custom Pokemon, custom gear, gyms, the Elite Four, the Battle Tower and Dungeons.
