How to Join a Cobblemon Server
Everything you need, step by step, plus fixes for common errors
Joining a Cobblemon server takes about 5 minutes. You need Minecraft Java Edition, the server's modpack, and the server IP. The easiest way is to install the server's official modpack, because it sets up the exact Minecraft version, mod loader and Cobblemon version the server uses. This guide walks through it using Complex Cobblemon (cobblemon.mc-complex.com) as the example, but the same steps work for most Cobblemon servers.
What you need
- Minecraft Java Edition on a PC, Mac or Linux computer. Cobblemon doesn't work on Bedrock, consoles or mobile (see Can You Play Cobblemon on Bedrock?).
- A modpack launcher: the free CurseForge App or Modrinth App.
- The server's modpack and IP. For Complex Cobblemon, that's the official Complex Cobblemon modpack and cobblemon.mc-complex.com.
Step 1: Install a launcher
Download and install the free
CurseForge App or
Modrinth App, then sign in with your Microsoft account so it can launch Minecraft Java Edition.
Step 2: Install the server's modpack
Open the official modpack page and click Install. For Complex Cobblemon:
The modpack installs Minecraft 1.21.1, the Fabric mod loader, Cobblemon and performance mods like Sodium, all at the versions the server expects. Using the official pack is the number one way to avoid joining errors.
Already have the Cobbleverse modpack? It works too. Complex is already in its server list, so you can join straight from Cobbleverse. See
Cobbleverse Servers: Where to Play Cobbleverse Multiplayer.
Step 3: Give it enough memory
Allocate 3 to 5 GB of RAM to the modpack. 4 GB is the sweet spot for most computers. Too little RAM is one of the two most common reasons players can't join. In the CurseForge App, go to Settings, then Minecraft, and set Allocated Memory. In the Modrinth App, open the modpack's settings and adjust Memory.
Step 4: Add the server and join
- Click Play on the modpack and wait for Minecraft to load.
- Click Multiplayer, then Add Server.
- Enter the server address: cobblemon.mc-complex.com
- Click Done, select the server and click Join Server.
- When the server asks you to download its resource pack, click Yes. It downloads automatically and is needed to play.
What happens on your first join
The first time you join Complex Cobblemon, your rival meets you at spawn and has you choose your starter Pokemon. Your rival then asks whether you want to /rtp straight into the open world or explore spawn first. From there, take on all 18 gyms in order, then the Battle Tower, the Battle Cafe and the Elite Four. Legendaries are free too: they spawn naturally for every player, and our /legend system boosts your chances the more in-game server tasks you complete, no purchase needed. Our
Cobblemon Server Guide covers everything else.
Common joining errors and fixes
The two problems we see most often on Complex Cobblemon are a wrong version and not enough RAM.
- Wrong version ("outdated client", "outdated server" or "mismatched mods"): your Minecraft, Cobblemon or mod versions don't match the server. Install the official modpack (Step 2) and update it to the latest version in your launcher. Don't add or remove mods yourself.
- Not enough RAM (crashes, freezing or kicked while loading): set 3 to 5 GB of RAM in your launcher (Step 3). 4 GB works for most computers.
- Declined the resource pack by accident: in Multiplayer, select the server, click Edit, set Server Resource Packs to Enabled, and join again.
- Low FPS: the official pack already includes Sodium. Lower your render distance to 8 to 10 chunks for a big boost.
- Can't connect or timed out: double-check the IP for typos and try again in a minute.
