Minecraft Simulation Distance Explained
What it does, the best setting for your PC, and how it works on servers
Short answer: The best simulation distance in Minecraft is 8 to 12 chunks for most PCs, and 5 to 6 on a weaker PC or laptop. Simulation distance is how many chunks around you the game keeps running, so crops grow, mobs move, redstone works and farms produce, while render distance is only how far you can see. On a server, the server decides the simulation distance, not your settings. Complex Gaming (hub.mc-complex.com) runs a simulation distance of 3 chunks to stay lag-free, but lets you see up to 15 chunks on Java (10 on Bedrock).
⚡ Quick facts
What it controls: how far from you crops grow, mobs move and redstone runs
Render distance: only how far you can see, not what's running
Good setting: 8 to 12 chunks for most PCs, lower for weaker PCs
On servers: the server's setting is what counts
Complex Gaming: 3 chunk simulation distance, up to 15 chunk view distance (10 on Bedrock)

What is simulation distance?
Minecraft splits the world into chunks, 16 by 16 blocks each. Simulation distance is the number of chunks around you, in every direction, where the game keeps things running. Inside that range:
- Crops, trees and sugar cane grow.
- Mobs and animals move, spawn and despawn.
- Redstone, hoppers and farms keep working.
Outside that range, chunks can still be visible, but nothing happens in them. A farm that's too far from you simply stops.
Simulation distance vs render distance
| Render distance | Simulation distance |
|---|
| What it does | How far you can see | How far the world keeps running |
| Affects | Mostly your graphics card and FPS | Mostly your CPU and game performance |
| On servers | Your setting, up to the server's limit | Set by the server |
You can have a high render distance for nice views and a lower simulation distance for smooth performance. Simulation distance can't usefully be higher than render distance.
The best simulation distance for your PC
| Your PC | Simulation distance |
|---|
| Low-end PC or laptop | 5 to 6 chunks |
| Mid-range PC | 8 to 10 chunks |
| High-end PC | 12 chunks or more |
If your game stutters or your FPS drops when lots is happening around you, lower the simulation distance first. If you run big farms in single player, raise it so they keep working while you're nearby.
How to change simulation distance
- Java Edition: Options, then Video Settings, then the Simulation Distance slider.
- Bedrock Edition: simulation distance is set per world, in the world's settings.
Simulation distance on servers
On a multiplayer server, the server decides the simulation distance for everyone. Changing your own setting won't make farms run further away from you. Servers often keep it low to stay lag-free, which is why big farms can stop working when you walk away from them.
On Complex Gaming, Skyblock, Prison, Survival and Factions run a simulation distance of
3 chunks, which keeps the servers lag-free with thousands of players online. Your farms run in the chunks within 3 of the one you're standing in, so build your farms close together and stand or AFK in the middle of them. Your view distance is separate: you can see up to 15 chunks on Java and 10 on Bedrock, depending on your own render distance setting. To keep farms going while you're away, you can use up to
4 AFK alts per player to keep your chunks loaded. See the
Network Rules for what alts can and can't be used for.
Simulation Distance FAQ
What is a good simulation distance in Minecraft?
8 to 12 chunks for most PCs. Go lower (5 to 6) on a weaker PC, or higher if you have a strong CPU and want farms to run further away.
Does simulation distance affect FPS?
It mostly affects your CPU and how smoothly the game runs. Render distance has a bigger effect on FPS.
What's the difference between render distance and simulation distance?
Render distance is how far you can see. Simulation distance is how far the world keeps running, like crops growing and farms working.
Why does my farm stop working on a server?
You're probably outside the server's simulation distance. Farms only run in chunks close to a player.
What simulation distance does Complex Gaming use?
A simulation distance of 3 chunks on Skyblock, Prison, Survival and Factions, so stand or AFK within 3 chunks of your farms. You can use up to 4 AFK alts to keep them loaded. Your view distance can go up to 15 chunks on Java and 10 on Bedrock.
What does simulation distance do in Minecraft?
Simulation distance sets how many chunks around you keep running. Inside it, crops grow, mobs move and spawn, and redstone, hoppers and farms work. Outside it, chunks can still be visible, but nothing happens in them.
What is the best simulation distance for Minecraft Bedrock?
8 to 12 chunks works for most devices on Minecraft Bedrock, and lower is better on a weaker device. On Bedrock, simulation distance is set per world, in the world's settings.
Can you change simulation distance on a server?
No. On a Minecraft multiplayer server, the server sets the simulation distance for everyone, and changing your own setting won't make farms run further away. Your render distance still works up to the server's limit.
